Running Accomplishments:

Dec. 5, 2009 -- St. Jude Memphis Marathon, 3:31:56. Boston qualifier for 2011. Two-time Boston finisher. 19 marathons so far in 10 states, Canada, Germany, England and Sweden. Next up: London (4/25/17)

5K -- 21:57; 10K -- 45:54; 20K-- 1:42:39, Half -- 1:39:30. All subject to improvement. Maybe. Or maybe not.

Short-term: Just get my motivation back and go from there

Long-Term Running Goals:

A lot of marathons, and other distances, slowly.

Personal:

Physician assistant/hospitalist, divorced since December 2010, one child (son). Ran high school track, took 10 years off, ran a 15K on my 25th birthday, took off next 21 years.

Progression run on the Wells Lake/Chaffee loop with Tiffany M. Started out really slow but didn't finish that way. We were around 8:35 for the last mile and averaged 9:26 for the whole thing. Take it easy this week, run hard on Saturday and I should have not only marathon #14 but get to 2000 miles for the year.

Easy run through the fog. Legs felt heavy, but a 9:20 pace was comfortable. Not sure what that means, other than show up Saturday and see what I've got. Weather permitting. Winter nastiness is expected Friday.

Got out early for a 4 mile trot to beat the winter weather. It drizzled on my a bit, but not hard or for long, and it's not cold enough to freeze. Yet. That comes this afternoon. I'd leave now for Memphis if I could, but a little issue called "work" is in the way. What will the roads be like at 7 when I get through? Will it be drivable? If not, Memphis isn't happening. I can't see getting out of there Friday morning if I can't tonight, but I guess that is a Plan B too. No race would be disappointing, but at the same time I've done Memphis twice before and five other marathons this year, so it wouldn't be like missing Boston or something.

Finally got out o run after the marathon in Memphis was frozen out. Legs felt heavy, as they often do after a prolonged layoff, but they had energy too. Decided to run for an hour, and the last six laps or so were at close to MP. Not great, but OK.

First crack at Billat intervals. Thirty seconds at mile race pace followed by 30-second recovery jog, one after another after another. Harder than it sounds. I got 20 done. Probably could have done a few more, but the goal is not to ruin myself for the next 3-4 days, so I thought shutting down at 20 was reasonable. Wound up with 7 miles total and about 1.6 at the prescribed pace. I'm glad I didn't try this on an 80-degree day. I worked up enough of a sweat on a 40-degree day.

Easy recovery tonight after work.  Could have skipped it since I'm running at 7:45 in the morning, but tonight got me to 2000 miles for the year and I wanted to get there tonight. It's going to be hard enough to get to 2100 by the end of the year as it is without too much skipping. Tomorrow, not sure. Maybe 12, maybe 14, depending on how I feel and how cold it is (mid-20s, maybe).

Recovery run. Waited too long to go and temp was over 60 by the time I finished. Kept the pace nice and slow, 1:13ish for 7.67. I was tempted to do hill bounds at the end by heavy legs convinced me otherwise. That can wait unti, maybe, tomorrow. We'll see if I have the discipline to run every day until the end of the year. That's my current goal.

Testing the Achilles after three-plus days off. Eight miles seemed to be OK although we'll see how it feels in the morning. Wound up with a sub-9 average. It felt pretty easy, which may be related to rested legs. Being 33 degrees didn't hurt either; that's ideal running weather for me,

Lots of hills. Lots of traffic at noon on Christmas Eve too. No real near misses though. AT acted up in the last mile and a half after coming up the hill on 58th or whatever that is. I shut it down instead of stretching it out to 10 as originally planned.

Tried to do a sow 5 on Christmas morning in Bryant. Uh, no. By 1.5 miles the AT was screaming at me and it was only getting worse. So I walked/limped three-quarters of a mile back to the house. I'm gonna have to let this heal, however long that takes.

The Achilles tendon was feeling better this morning so decided to test it at SHS. Within a mile it was hurting again, not as bad as Christmas morning but still there. So I shut it down after four laps. That will take care of 2013 for me at 2055 miles.
